I've always felt Ft Lauderdale to be a 'relatively' safe place compared to other cities of similar size and stature. Glad to see the stats back that up.

I wonder, though, how the shrinking population of Broward will affect these stats? Are the criminals leaving in proportionate numbers?

I don't think so (there was a slight rise in crime rate in the county as a whole, from record lows nonetheless), but the less community minded malcontents seem to be leaving. I think the important "sense of community" aspect will improve and the area will become less transient. Either that, or it will wither and die. I guess time will tell.

I wouldn't describe crime as "low" for the area as a whole, but "about average". There are a lot of exaggerations posted on here and a lot of the places that are supposedly "better" actually fare a lot worse.

Yeah, the lowest overall crime rate in Ft. Lauderdale since the 1970s...

Good news naysayers - I've done some straight line extrapolation using these numbers and it looks like it will be safe to drive to Publix in 2011.
