SO After you've been here, lets say 5 years......
And after you've done the beach, done the diving, gone fishing, owned a boat and wish you never had one, been to metro zoo and know the animals by name, driven up to Orlando to do the parks and know the turnpike like your back yard, been on cruises, spent your money in south beach, driven on the palmetto expressway at rush hour 5 days a week, the grove is just another city, been through a category 4 hurricane with no electricity for a week in 90 plus degree heat, put up with the 5th ranked most obnoxious drivers in the country, spent too much at the casino's or horse racing, been to the museums and know enough that you could be the guide for each. Oh and did I mention visiting the Keys and know what you will find at each mile marker on your way down to walk on Duval street.
Then LETS TALK about it
AND yes Florida is Boring

I had to put my two cents in. I am a Jersey Girl that moved to Florida and I also think its sooo boring. After thinking long and hard, here is what I came up with. If your originally from Florida you don't know any other way of life. Its your "home" and you have friends here and know your surroundings. I came to realize that its not the amount of acitivities out there its being able to go to a place that you'll run into familiar faces. Kinda like the bar "cheers". I have gone to many of the activities here and don't know a sole, it was boring. When I would go to them at home I would always run into someone I knew. Just being able to drop by a friends house anytime is something to do. In my opinion close friends make a place home and not boring and if you move to a state where you don't have them your really going to be bored out of your mind and spend lots of money just to keep yourself occupied.
Make new friends. Join community groups and organizations; volunter in the neighborhood, help feed the poor and hugry.
So true. My sister just rented a 4th floor walk-up 1 bedroom in Marble Hill (NOT quite Riverdale) for $825. Go figure.
It seems there are two types of people who talk about rent cost when it comes to NYC on these boards. Those who are actually from the city have rented and lived there actually know where to go to find decent rents. Then those who are not from the city or those who havent been there for years and type on message boards with no clue of what they are talking about
I had a chance to get a $1,000 a month three bedroom in Coop City a few years back. But I don't like the bronx so it wasn't going to happen.
Anyway, for those who talk about how Florida isn't boring. Glad you guys have things to do here. Again, some things may be your cup of tea where as others may not find what Florida has to offer appealing. As my man MisterNY said, to each their own.

I see you are in Sarasota. I can't speak for that place but in South Florida people are not overly friendly so it is hard to find friends here outside of your buddies. At least that has been my experience. My mother was down here for a bit and for the time she was her she didn't meet to many people should would consider hang out buddies. She was so happy when she left here. I think as you said its easier if you are from here. Or if you have buddies that have moved down here from where ever you are from. But as tony said, maybe try finding clubs where you can meet up with people of similar interest. I know its tuff though, best of luck.
Wildstyle. Having a debate with you seems to be an exercise in frustration. The file to which you linked is a report based on 2000-2002(!) government surveys of people that have likely not compared the prices first hand. I’m glad you found some good deals at the grocery store here while you were on vacation. I go back and forth very frequently and for you to assume that I’m “on something” for stating my first-hand observations is kinda silly. Although I will admit that you are frequently on point, I’ve also noticed that you sometimes feel the need to exaggerate to make your points and/or underestimate the breadth of experiences of others. (e.g. the mythical $1,000 per month apartment (or brownstone floor – loved that one).
And to the folks that complain Florida is boring, it may have its various shortcomings…that cannot be denied, but it is all truly relative. What are your expectations and to which city are you comparing South Florida? Is that comparison realistic? Or, if you don't want to try to do anything about it, why not at least travel more and get the experiences you desire that way? You will have a new appreciation for where you live at the very least and focus more on the positives.

I am from Brooklyn, born and raised. I am in the city often to see family friends and for business (job interviews), in 2008 I was there about 4/5 times that year just to give you a idea. So your "on vacation" statement doesn't apply here. As I said, when I am home (new york) i do my grocery shopping (don't generally eat out). I have first hand knowledge of food cost in both places. Has nothing to do with deals, sales or anything else.
As far as me exaggerating, riiiight. Check through my post history, you will see more often than not, I generally back up what I say with links and data. Now, If you can't find a 1,000 dollar a month apartment in NYC then thats your problem. My cousin rents off of Nostrand avenue, a one bedroom over a fish market for 600 a month. Have a friend renting in the Bronx in Coop City for just under a thousand (think his is either a one or two, dont remember). As I stated in a previous post, this family friend tried to get me to move to the Bronx but I don't like uptown so it wasn't going to happen. Have another cousin who rents on Staten Island, in a loft for 800. Anyway, thats the difference between people who know the city and are born and raised their and transplants. those born and raised know where to go for decent rents, transplants or those who have never actually rented in the city dont. Now, one thing I will say, some people may not be comfortable with renting in the places I am talking about because the faces may be darker than theirs or because Yo MTV raps tells them everybody in certain areas are "gangstas" so they don't want to rent int hese places. However I have never had any problems in any of these areas I am talking about. Tell you what, I will be in NYC in june, pm me and if you are at the house you "maintain" in NYC I will show you how to find decent rents in NYC and I wont charge you either.
Also, as for your displeasure with the year the data is from, just search the usda site, they have more up to date information. Secondly, do you think some how, magically Fort Lauderdale fell below NYC in food prices? Come on now. Lastly, you are trying to argue against government data with your suspect knoweldge? But I guess thats what you do when facts don't agree with your opinions, discredit it (in your mind). As for the frustation you are feeling that might be your opinions not matching up with the facts I presented (shrugs)
When it comes to people not liking what Florida has to offer, as misterNYC has said, not every place is for everyone. If they dont like florida then thats their opinion and they are entitiled to it. No amount of "we have beaches and scuba diving" is gonna change that. as Southafrica also pointed out, being here for awhile (living) and posting from some other locale about how much fun Florida is for residents is a bit on the unrealistic side.
I think S. Florida does have its appeal if you like the night life, beachs and fishing. But for me I am a family man with a kid. We like quality parks and cultural events. We don't get a lot of that here. Have in-laws in Chicago and when there you can go to millenium park, lincoln park, taste of chicago and on and on. When I am in NYC we can hit propsect park, central park, Jackson Heights for some good desi (indian) food, Atlantic Ave for some arabic eats and do a host of events being put on by the city and local groups. Unfortunatly we don't get much of that here. I should add, I think Miami does have more to offer than Fort Lauderdale though. To me Miami has more potential than Fort Lauderdale ever will. If for some horrible reason I couldn't leave S. Florida eventually I would definitly look at living in Miami.
Well given that my mom was raised in Queens and my entire extended family is still in NY (Long Island) I would say that I do know NY...
But that really isn't the point is it? If my subject line had been "FL is better than NY" maybe you would have a arguement to make. Can you please try to stay on topic here and drop the whole NY vs FL thing? That would be great...
ANYWAY...all I was asking is WHAT people can do other places that they can't do in FL...I wasn't asking about cost of living or WHY people choose to live here over other places. So thank you MisterNY for actually staying on topic. So NY has a jazz/neo soul scene that South FL doesn't have. So I guess if that is all you are into, you might be bored...good to know.
What else?? And like I asked, are all the people who say FL is boring from NYC?? So 36% of the people in that poll who said it's boring here are all from NYC? Why else are people bored here? What do you like to do that you can do in South FL??
I've seen some reference to South FL just being a place to party. I don't party and I don't really drink all that much (which is one reason I hate DC...it's one of the only things to do here, party and museums). I am an active person and big into SCUBA diving. I know that I, personally, won't be bored in FL ever because there is so much great diving up and down the Southeast coast.

My daughter is renting a one bedroom in Astoria, Queens, walking distance to bus/train and 20 minutues to Manhattan, for $750 a month. ALONE. She is a teacher in NYC, 2nd year teaching, and makes $55,000 a year. She can well afford $750 a month by herself with that salary.
