Unfortunately, you are the one on the slippery slope my friend! It seems highly likely that it wouldn't have been just us Brits speaking a foreign language if we'd been defeated by the Germans.

If the UK and its Empire, (which included Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and another 60 or so countries) had lost the war in 1940 after the German invasion of France, the US would still have been attacked in 1941 but most probably on two fronts - by Japan in the west and by Germany in the east, which would have had catastrophic consequences for the USA.

The Axis Powers would have had control over the Royal Navy, the French Navy, the Imperial Japanese Navy and the Kriegsmarine, at the time four of the five largest and most advanced navies in the world giving them the power to blockade anywhere they wished - including the US. They would also have had control over British overseas territories and having control of islands such as Bermuda, the Bahamas and the Caribbean Islands would have enabled naval and air attacks on many American cities. Just think if they had taken control of Canada......

Worse still, a defeated Britain would have increased the likelihood that Germany could have developed atomic weaponry earlier than the US and crucially, that they certainly would have developed long range rocket delivery systems enabling them to deliver atomic or conventional weapons to targets anywhere in the US - remember Werner Von Braun was a fully paid up Nazi SS officer long before he was persuaded to join NASA and develop the Saturn V. The US only began developing advanced rocket technology after 1945 using captured German equipment and personnel.

It's only because we achieved the Dunkirk evacuation, won the Battle of Britain and then for two years fought the Germans and Italians in the air, at sea and on land across North Africa and the Middle East that the German war machine was stalled. The fact that Hitler was so mad he invaded Russia in June 1941 didn't help their cause either!

When the USA eventually entered the war in December 1941, it was only because the Japanese had attacked the US at Pearl Harbor leading the US to declare war on Japan. As a result of the Axis powers' 1940 Tripartite agreement, this meant that Germany and Italy would declare war on the US. The US only declared war on Germany and Italy after Japan, Germany and Italy had already done so to it!

The first US land forces action against the Germans was Operation Torch in November 1942 - WW2 in Europe was more than half over and the Germans were already losing! History isn't usually as the good folks of Hollywood would have you believe. U-571 anyone?

As you say, it's all water under the bridge but history is too important to ignore or distort. Even now, mistakes made in the past being replicated today in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Nice post, LG. But you gotta admit that, as ethnocentric as we Yanks are, we helped a little.

You most certainly did!!

However to bring this back to the topic regarding corruption, it is twisting facts to suit a position or purpose that skews history, politics and facilitates corruption - whether at a local or International level.

When the history of the 2nd Iraq war of 2003 onwards is written, corruption at the heart of government and big business should be hard to hide however those interests try and disguise their wrongdoings. "We thought they had WMD" and " We're protecting the USA from terrorist attacks" - FFS!!

That is the same for local government too as self-interests seek to obsfucate their motives and actions.

Maybe a few anti-tax riots would work over here!!

We seem to share the similar belief systems, but even I can't believe you opened that can here! Duck and cover, baby!

Someone doesn't realize how hood-winked the American public is. Hint: They get their political beliefs from entertainers and lie-filled viral e-mailed planted by corporate America. In this country, you can wave an American flag and they believe anything. Everyone is too lazy to actually check sources...

That's the problem with people buying out of their realm; they assume life is the same everywhere.

I suspect that you missed the Cape Coral resident that called the European rioters "morons."

Education in Lee County and the US is poor for a reason...

I can see that you are very opinionated. Be prepared for your neighbors to have more than a few things to say to you, too.

Cape is loaded with corruption and incompetence, bloated union employment and government, they are going to tax people out of there , a new fire tax, a new utility tax and still your taxes go up, when does it end.

When people start running them out of the country like they do overseas. You know we are really in trouble when they start taxing companies they don't even own and a corrupt judge agrees with it. The only way to fix this system is to get rid of it.
