I may be moving to the Fort Myers / Cape Coral area, but I don't know the first thing about the area. Like what are the bad neighborhoods that I should avoid moving to? What's safe? What apartments are dangerous?

I have a limiting budget (around $500) for rent, so I know my options are limited, but I would at least like to know what I am getting into.

I would stay in the Cape Coral area, it's less crime and not really any bad areas. Some are a little more run down but I don't think there is anywhere in Cape Coral that I wouldn't feel safe. Unlike Ft. Myers.....

Although the rent is a lot cheaper than most places up North, $500 doesn't leave a lot of options in what I would consider good areas.

$500 for rent is not going to be in a good area no matter what part of town you're in.

Your only real choice is to maybe rent a room in a nice house for that amount. If you are single, no kids, and no pets, then you may be able to rent a room from someone. Other than that, you won't get much (even in a bad area) for $500.

You will have a heck of time finding anywhere ( good, bad or indifferent) to rent for $500 a month. And if you do find a place that cheap, don't take it. You'll be much better off renting a room or find a roomate to share expenses.

Up to $500/mth you are looking in Ft.Myers or Lehigh. There are 18 for Rent on MLS. Rentals in Cape Coral, annual, start at $535+.
Check Craigslist.

I would look at apartment buildings for rentals in this price range. Any single family for $500/mth will be what you pay for.

Hope this helps!

Make sure you go through a rental agency. There's a common scam down here, where the landlord takes your security deposit & rent, but knows the place is being foreclosed on. In a couple months, you're out on your butt, with no money and no security deposit.

Trulia - Real Estate, Homes for Sale, Apartments for Rent, Local data lists 5 rentals in Cape Coral for 500 or less. A place for 450 even has a pool.

For 500 I think you are very limited. Maybe a room for rent. Check extra fees. SFL is big on those, in general. Also look for come on rates that go up later.
