I'm trying to conserve water so I don't want to water more than I need to... With my lawn it is mostly clay/hard soil. I've aerated it several times, but there are tons of rocks in the ground under the topsoil. I start watering at 4 AM.

1. How often do you water your lawn in DFW?
2. Between which hours?
3. Do you find that DFW has very hard soil?

1. Twice a week, but landscapers recommend 3 times a week during excessive heat and if the city does not have a limit on watering lawns
2. My timer is set at 5am. Again, landscapers recommend early morning as the best time to water.
3. Yes!

1. Usually every other day for 45 min. to an hour. I usually move the sprinkler to a different area each time (hits almost the whole yard) and often move it once while watering.
2. Always after 7:00pm and I try to wait until after dark.
3. My soil in Bedford is extremely sandy.

I had my sprinkler system set for MWF @ 15 min/cycle, starting at 4:00 a.m. That wasn't cutting it at all. It wasn't long enough to sink into the roots, so my yard guys recommended that I switch to 2 days /wk for 30 min. /cycle, so that's what I'm doing now.

It's hanging in there, but this weather is just horrible no matter what.

Me? I've pretty much thrown my hands up and let the dang thing go brown. Ain't got the money for sky high water bills.

As for watering advice, during normal circumstances (that is, not exceptional drought) I water 2 times a week for 15 minutes each, or less if it is a rainy week. It's best to water in the morning between 5 and 9, to avoid large amounts of wasted water to evaporation. From what I've heard, watering at night can lead to greater susceptibility to plant disease. As for soil... I don't really know if it's hard or soft, because I've never lived anywhere else to compare it to.

my landscaping guy (self-proclaimed guru of green ha!) said the same thing about night watering, that grass tends to mold. He said this when I asked him why was my grass turning blue-ish and I was watering at night. Just FYI.

My lawn guy told me, Bermuda will go dormant, 1x per week at 30-45 minutes wont keep it "lush green" but it will survive.(DEEP watering is more effective than short watering) It will green up as soon (if ever!) we get rain. same as it does in the fall/winter.
St. Augustine, will have a harder time, and cinch bugs really come out and destroy it during excessive heat.

So, my entire lawn gets watered, 1x per week @ 40minutes. Trees get the soaker on 3x per week for 30minutes around the outside (tap roots, not base of tree) Other trees and bushes hand water as needed.

Foundation get even days for 30minutes. (3 stations, that also gets some ofthe planting near the house)

so far so good. Nothing has died (even hydrageneas which look horrible and stressed, but alivea) grass is greenish with brown areas, nothing too bad.
