Hotwire.com and Priceline both let you give a price , star rating, some other details and they can give you a lower rate if you're willing to not know what it is until after booking.

Hotel Tonight - Book a Hotel Tonight is an app that focuses on last minute hotel deals. you get alerted and book through your smartphone.

these are some sites that search many reservation sites at once for hotel prices

KAYAK - Cheap Flights, Hotels, Airline Tickets, Cheap Tickets, Cheap Travel Deals - Compare Hundreds of Travel Sites At Once
Expedia Travel: Vacations, Cheap Flights, Airline Tickets & Airfares
TravelNow.com - Global Discount Hotel Reservations

I personally wish that there was a search engine to find hotels that don't necessarily want to pay for advertising (to find budget hotels better).

Also, check if a govt rate applies, we get a state employee discount.

Many times there are special rates for employees of nearby employers, so, if a company has large facilities in an area you're visiting, ask about their rate. they never require you to show proof..

Personally, I would NEVER use Priceline. we tried them once, and booked a hotel in Honolulu. what a dump---even the website was depressing, that's when they would be putting their best foot forward! We decided to eat the $300 charge, and book a better hotel. But, PL never billed us! Out of curiosity, I called the hotel, there was no reservation in our name! Can you imagine, going all that way to find you're booked in a dump, then arguing your way in when they have no record?

Best deal I ever got----6 night FREE at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Waikiki! Now FREE is a pretty good deal, but....because we were Hilton Platinum members, they upgraded us to a Rainbow Tower Suite---corner suite, ocean view.free eats in the VIP lounge......hey, those were the days!
