Well, sometimes masturbation is enough.

Seriously, I seldom travel anywhere these days. Haven't been outside of a 150 mile radius for years (other than for work once or twice). The travel shows or articles on the internet are satisfying enough for me. With the price of travel nowadays, I'd be in a state of shock and guilt the whole time I was traveling. So... I go with the substitute for "having sex." It's certainly cheaper.

African pioneer/explorer Richard Meinertzhagen lived long enough to see the travel shows on television and commented there was no need to travel and experience Africa first hand as it was all there before you onscreen. I suppose he was referring to the old Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom with Marlin Perkins.

Perhaps because it can be quite dangerous traversing the African bush in person

And get on a treadmill and you will think you are there. LOL I remember watching one of these shows one day and mentioned to my husband that I think I enjoy watching the shows more than being there. No walking required.

In our retirement we have also gotten a new interest in history and science also. Funny how learning is fun when you don't have to do it. Had to get close to 70 to learn that. Isn't that a pity? Maybe that is why grandparents are so good for their grandchildren. We make learning fun for them too.

I can't imagine not traveling and seeing the world in-person and, instead, just sitting home and looking at the rest of the world on a screen.

How is travel so expensive that it's unaffordable? What's your budget?

If travel is something you simply don't enjoy, or you have trouble taking time off from work for it, I can understand.. but I have a hard time believing that travel is too expensive unless you make much less than an average salary.

2 things I never skimp on, travel and food (No, never go to restaurants!).

I was going to take my roommate to a local bar for New Year's Eve, and when I nervously asked the price for a bottle of beer, I walked out! Went home, put that money into my travel fund, went online and bought 2 tickets to L.A. (taking my unemployed roommate along) for a cheap, frugal day of riding the light rail lines (not staying over, no motel costs) $113 RT, and a $5 all day rail pass.

I live by this saying: Nothing brings you closer to eternity than travel! The real thing, nothing like it!

I only watch Travel videos to refresh my memory of all the places I've been in this world!

What is an average salary? I make 26k a year and the gf 24k. We live frugally, but we don't have enough to get plane tickets and travel to Hawaii or L.A. Our vacations are usually to some place close (Chicago, N.Y.C.) and we drive. Even spending $600 or more is a good chunk of cash for us. Not everyone is making good money.
