I earn $ 48000$/y (my wife doesn't work). As I own my flat, I have no rent to pay (no mortgage anymore either). No car.No theatre or restaurants. And we don't miss it!
And travel is our passion.
So 11 months out of 12, we watch lots and lots of travelsshows ont our HD YV screen, and the last month of the year, wow! with all the money we managed to save, we fly to one of those exotic destinations we dream of the rest of the year.
And believe me, the experience is worthwile!

A day trip to San Diego from LA which is over 100 miles away easily costs less than $100 including food, gas, etc. Even if you need a hotel, your costs will only run at about $100 a day here if you budget reasonably.

I'm from ohio though. Lol. I agree if we traveled 100 miles away that would be cheap. That is what we usually do.

OMG, you are just like my husband. LOL. I love watching the travel shows.

Travel shows are a good way to see what is out there and to give one ideas what they can do on a trip. But it is not the same as actually being there.

...especially in the middle of a blizzard when you are stuck in a hotel, or delayed in departing for three days because of storms, or sitting in a hospital because of Montezuma's revenge. Then there are places like the pyramids. I don't think I would be caught dead there right now... wait, that didn't come out right...

Both methods of learning about a place have their positives and negatives. To play a little with a previous post - a visit to the Mustang Rance would probably not be the same as a tv show about it.

As someone who has been to Africa first hand, I can guarantee you they are not the same thing in my opinion.

It's all about priorities and where you are in life. Travel shows are great and interesting but they are in no way the same thing as actually going to a place. But if travel is not a high priority or a big deal, then great - watch the shows. Just don't fool yourself into thinking it's the same.

TV travel shows are the worst. All they do is give free publicity to expensive locations. I don't remember EVER seeing a show about travel on a budget.

There were like those $40 a day shows but I think they were mostly food...
