OK, this is to see if anyone has any great ideas for living inexpensively in Canada 6 months of the year, namely May thru Oct.? I own a house in AZ, but don't currently own one in Canada.
Last summer I rented a condo for $965 inclusive in a great, high-demand BC spot, but didn't enjoy it like I'd hoped. The people and attitude wasn't for me. This year I'd like to be in Ontario but find it so hard to find a place at an affordable price. What I paid last summer wasn't too bad but if I could do it for less, I'd love it.
For you Americans, Canada is WAY more expensive than much of the US. And the vacancy rate is lower too so finding a place is difficult, although they probably exist.
I should qualify that I have a business to run (from home) so need phone and internet, and I have a small dog. I need a furnished place, and I'd consider house sitting someone's toy dog while I'm there. I just don't want to share a place due to my work.
I plan on doing this every year and eventually would like to have my own permanent place in Canada too.
About the only part of Canada that is not very pricey are the places north of Maine -- Newfoundland and the maritime areas have lost population as fishing is a hard life that is not as lucrative in the North Atlantic as in places like Alaska.
Very different than pricey Vancouver! Even places in the mountains of B.C. are pricey as all the wealthy folks from Vancouver have driven up prices in the spots that are skiing areas in the winter and summer resorts...
My initial reaction was university summer housing. However, that generally only lasts from May-August and I am not sure it would be as cheap as you would like.
I can think of some rural areas in Ontario where you could find reasonable housing BUT ... they are away from quality cell and internet service.
Why Canada. If it is expensive and you didn't like the people where it was more affordable, aren't there cooler places up North that might fit the bill. Also, can't help but wonder what it was about the people you didn't like. Also, what are the restrictions on how long you can stay in Canada as a non citizen?
I'm also curious about living in Canada as a US citizen. All I would need is a studio apartment, and it seems that rents in Montreal are cheaper than in a comparable city in the US. I get the impression that just about everything else is more expensive.
I've read that US citizens can stay for 6 months without a visa. I assume that that means 6 months out of 12, and that one can't just go back to the US for a week and then return to Canada for another 6 months, but I have not yet been able to confirm this. Does anyone know the answer to this?
