In my dream world, the thermostat would be about 73 degrees year round. That would be lovely!

We never set it above 68 degrees.

if we didnt care, it would be set at 73-75 degrees in winter so we could actually be comfortable!

Our heat pump both heats and cools. It is 42 years since we owned a house with a chimney or furnace. A programmable thermostat won't work for us, as retirees we get up when we feel like it. Our 2 BR condo has 5 ceiling fans which are a huge help. Right now the thermostat is set at 77.

AC is set at 68 degrees. As soon as it is cooler than that outside, the AC is turned off and the windows opened. In the morning, the house is closed up and the cold air from night is enough to keep the house cool until about noon, when the AC is turned on again.

Heat in winter is also kept about 68 degrees, but that is a wood stove, so no thermostat involved.

My family has very little tolerance for heat and I don't scrimp to the point that we are miserable. AC is something that I pay for without complaining. I save elsewhere in the budget.
