I've really enjoyed my hanging baskets along the front porch this spring and summer, though they're looking pretty sad now with very few blooms. I was just going to take them down, but has anyone had luck replanting with something that will tolerate the cooler weather to come? I'm in 7, so it'll get cold by November but not craaazy cold.
I just thought of some..but I feel bad for the plants if you're just going to throw them away after Fall. Sniff. If you promise to put it in the ground so it can bloom next year...hmm how about mums? You can plant them in the ground after the flowers die.
There are now "trailing" pansies that sound like they would be perfect for baskets. Google it to see what they look like, but unlike regular pansies, they grow over the edge and trail down like a petunia. They should also be very cold hardy and take freezes/frosts like regular pansies. I don't think they're very common yet, so you wouldn't find them at Lowes or Home Depot.
