A few weeks ago I found a really nice surprise in my garden . My mother stuck couple date pits in the ground and voilà , I have two baby palm trees growing. I moved them yesterday into containers to make sure they grow properly and I can plant them in a good spot. Not sure if I will have dates from these trees in my life time but it's worth a try. I also have green figs on my little tree but I don't think they will ripen, but I am hoping and keeping my tree watered and happy. I went to Wallmart yesterday and bought some mums, white and red, planted them in a flower bed at the front of the house. Trimmed the dogwood shrub so the walkway up to my door is walkable.
Today, since it was under 90 around here, finally, I trimmed two bottlebrush bushes, because I don't want them to get too big. I planted a loropetlum in the hole where a croaked azelea was, and a Knockout rose where the other croaked azelea was. I also I planted a white butterfly bush and 5 perennials which were on clearance for $2. @. I noticed that one, of 3, lavender has up and croaked on me.
I cannot figure out this Georgia gardening thing. Why would 1 plant die when two right next to it are fine? Why did my echinacea die, when they love baking in the sun? It's no wonder that, when we moved here, everything was barren except for two Hawthorne bushes. Those people were just smarter than I am.
I used a 20 cents Firecracker marigold seed package from Walmart in the spring and boy do these guys grow, they also stink :-) so I have been yanking them off to clear some space so I can get my fall plants. I filled two big garbage bags already, I think I will use them again next year.
Transplanted cucumbers and fall squash I started in containers a couple of weeks ago this morning.
Gonna go play around some more in the garden here in a bit, I have the gardeners junkie itch going, lol
still getting a handful of okra daily and the cherry tomatoes are hanging in there, but they are rippening very slowly. We went from hot, hot, summer to days in the 60s.
It's in the 60s today, amazing, we were in the 90s yesterday. I cleaned one big pot and put some radishes seeds in it. My first time to try them, so we'll see how it goes. My tomatoes still going strong, lots of greens but they take their sweet time to ripen. I guess some fried green tomatoes are in my future :-) been picking a few okras every other day, dump them in a bag in the freezer till I have enough to make a meal out of them.
