Extension services will always tell you to water in the morning, avoid evening watering if possible. Evvening moisture plus darkness promotes the growth of fungi and mold, and yes, it could provide more harbor for insects.

I suggest if you are a rookie, you start off on a good footing and visit your local county Extension service, or find out which Extension serves your area and browse their website for research-based articles. If there are any infallible hort services out there, it's the Extension services.
Good stuff, here.

No no no!! Sorry, Reactionary, but that ain't so. We covered that in Master Gardener's class. You can bury an iron nail, but even if it does corrode and enter the soil, it is not a form of iron that plants can take up. And besides, iron isn't what lowers soil pH and turns hydrangeas blue. That would be sulphur.

Keep 'em coming folks. I'll be here all week.

Oops, I just realized you were being sarcastic! Should have known, Reactionary! I also use Espoma sulphur (see, I spell it the old way).

Mineral oil, or any oil on the tassels of corn after pollination to keep those green worm things out.

Its ok to leave scientific explanations/terminology/lab results behind and have a little fun with life. A lot of the old timer tricks were brought about because they didn't have a ton of money, they were resourceful, used what they had in their sheds, garages or drawers, not what they figured out after extensive scientific research. I'll have fun with my garden this year, try some new things...if they dont work I'll give you and science props! P.S. I started this thread for some good old tricks that people have tried, that have worked, not for scientific explanations. None the less have a good day!
I have no idea, but without a controlled test, there is no way to know. There are many variables involved. The matches likely weren't the only variable.

Look, forget the old timer tips and tricks. Some things worked and I'm glad they discovered those tips -- but unless those things were validated with scientific research at some point, it's all just mumbo jumbo. You have no idea if the nail, or the hair or the matchsticks planted under your tomatoes and peppers has any effect on yield because you don't know what is involved in a controlled research study.

See, it's like seeing ants on your plants that have chewed leaves. You blame the ants. Well, guess what? It isn't the ants. Ants don't chew your plants. They just happen to be noshing on the honeydew left by the aphids that did the damage to your plants. But you blame the ants because that's what you see, but you don't opewn your eyes to see the whole picture of what is going on.

Science, people. Not voodoo. If a plant with matches underneath it yields more than a plant with no matches underneath it, that tells you nothing.

for the most beautiful roses you have ever seen...collect and place a pregnant womans urine on them...in the Philippines it is a very common practice and they are BEAUTIFUL and bloom fantastically because of the phosphate in the urine.

OMG, this is the thread from hell.

Urine contains urea. Urea is nitrogen. You want free pee for your plants? Get a dog to pee on them. Or collect your own and pour it on them. Go on, have at it. And you don't have to be preggers for it to burn the jeebers out of your plants.

The tassels or the silk? Those worms are a serious bummer when you're getting the ears ready for dinner.

Bad things can happen if you oil silks up before the silks turn brown. I saw a lot of this since 2008: Arrested Ears Resulting From Pre-Tassel Applications of Pesticide & Spray Additive Combinations - Corny News Network (Purdue University)

This thread has me in stitches. I'm imagining pregnant women lining up outside people's yards... . Too funny!
