Hellpaso made a good guess. Judging by the location, leaves and the color of the seed pod it is most likely a Western Honey Mesquite.

Mmm, thanks to both of you. I've looked at the photos of honey mesquite. I'm sure you're right ..... but while I do see one curly bean pod, that doesn't appear to be the norm?

I may return to the site and get a definitive photo of the foliage.
