I have just ordered a dogwood tree online, despite the fact that they are not common here in the south. I had to order it special, so i could get a variety which is disease resistant and tolerant up to zone 9. I'm in zone 8, so on paper at least, it should be fine.
I also had good success with calla lilies when i lived in zone 5. They werent supposed to be winter hardy, yet they were.

I am not sure what you mean. You live in zone 8, you should have no problem with dogwood

Dogwood in nature is an understory tree, so your biggest issue will be deciding where to plant it. It will not want to be in full sun all day long, and will appreciate some shady relief part of the day. I live in NC and dogwoods do okay here in 7b.

I don't know where in the south you are, some parts have more brutal summers than others. Dogwoods don't take very kindly to extended searing summer temperatures. And they're not partial to alkaline soils either.

Here in the Pacific northwest there are dogwoods everywhere and just about all of them are sick. It's a really sorry sight to see. Apparently in the early 1990's some kind of disease took hold here and has since infected practically every dogwood tree. They look ok in the spring, but after they're finished blooming and then for the rest of the year their leaves are diseased and ugly and they look absolutely awful. We've had some young and not well established trees (5-6 years old) just up and die. The older ones seem to suffer through year after year but they look terrible.

There are also quite a few grafted dogwoods around here (maybe they were supposed to be disease resistant?) that seem to spend all of their energy putting out thick wads of suckers at the graft line. Not a desirable trait.

Well, we visited several nurseries in GA and SC. Aside from some unlabled trees at Lowes, the nurseries aren't carrying them because "they dont do well here". We're in the coastal area.

Yes, azoria, I carefully chose it to be disease resistant and for warmer temps, and have a semi shade corner of the yard to put it in. I'm in 8b coastal GA, so it could go either way. What I mean is, if this one doesnt do well, then no dogwood will.

It is a Monrovia Venus.
