You dig a hole a bit larger than the pot, put some compost in to the hole, to the level where the potted plant's soil level while standing on the compost in the hole, is level with your soil level, you then take the plant out of the pot, place plant in hole, upright, hold straight, and fill around the now pot-less plant, with compost, firm down with hands, top up a bit more if needed, then give it a good watering. Water at least every few days, for at least a few months. Don't trust the weather, the plant cant reach any water actually in the soil, it's root system hasn't got that far yet.

I pay about a 10% or so premium from a nursery which guarantees its plants "forever". They take things back, no questions asked. It's a great feature and well worth the pricing.

Just because a person can dig a whole does not make them a landscaper. Just beware of people who can do work on the cheap. That's what you get.

OP, shop around with a good nursery and they might be able to provide the planting service, guarantee the trees, and/or suggest someone with whom they work to have your trees planted. Original estimate seems high, but you have to make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

This amazes me, how complex the planting of trees can be made. Being a horticulturist, I've always been viewed as an unskilled worker, often paid accordingly, and actually viewed myself as such. I've just been in the wrong place.

A note on Leylandii; I've grown thousands of them, and honestly, they are one of the easiest plants to look after, if you've got enough space.
