I actually purchased crabgrass seed from a farm store to plant on two patches of ground where regular grass didn't grow. They were areas where I had cut down large trees and the spots remained bare. I watered for about 20 minutes a day and it grew in in about three weeks in the late fall. Where I live, water is expensive, so anything green that I can keep trimmed and survives without watering is welcome.

Soil temperatures are warming. Keep an eye on the soil temperature in your area as to the window to properly put down crabgrass preventer.
