I have a very tall Catalpa tree in my front yard, close to the house that I was always afraid would come crashing down during a storm. I wanted it topped, but leaving the lower branches as is, so I hired a tree company to do the job. I pointed out where I wanted it cut.
So I had to go out for an hour and when I came back, to my horror they had cut from the bottom up. So now I'm left with a totem pole with arms!
Any idea whether it will grow again, or am I left with this eyesore?

Those normally are late at leafing out so you will have to wait to see. They do not like to be pruned hard or topped but that doesn't mean it will die. You will probably get new growth near the ends of the remaining stumps, so it may look a bit odd for a few years until it fills out. The other worry is that next winter it will have only sensitive new shoots, and is more likely to suffer winter damage.
I had to laugh when I read the first article on that Google search. It warned that once you start trimming a catalpa, you have to keep on doing it or you get an odd looking tree-- It reminded me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer warned Jerry about shaving his chest.

My sisters husband BUTCHERED 2 catalpa trees when he trimmed a hedge...they grew right back. I would guess they'll be OK.
