You can search through the forum here for suggestions. I like RootsMagic. It's not free, but it is only about $25 and there will probably be a sale in the next few weeks as Christmas is coming.
There are also threads on getting started. Read a few of those before you do anything.
I'm not a big fan of any of the free tree software but in the beginning I did use MyHeritage Family Tree Builder and for a freebie, it worked pretty well. I stopped using it when they started limiting how many people in your tree could be uploaded online for free. It doesn't limit the amount of people you can have in the tree software though.
I suggest Family Echo which I think is great as it allows you expand as much as you want and it is completely free. It also allows you to download your data in a few different forms for back-up purposes (again completely free).
I'm sort of a newbie too. I downloaded Ancestral Quest for free from the Mormons. My father and his relatives have researched back 1000 years, but his old program with all the info didn't work on my new computer. I was able to copy almost everything to this Ancestral Quest. I'm not familiar with other programs, so I can't say if it's good, but so far I'm happy with it. Ancestral Quest family tree software/genealogy software for Windows
I use Legacy, and started with the free trial. I don't think it's that difficult. There is a lot of help online if you need it. Legacy Family Tree Genealogy Software
I have also used Heritage which allows one enter up to 250 family members for free. It will also find matches and allow you to do record matches for free with wikitree, find a grave and billiongraves.
