I received my results from 23andme and looking in Conservative view (which is stated as 90% accurate), it shows I have 71.2% unassigned. I came to 23andme hoping to find out what my ethnicity is, since I don't know anything about my bio dad. The results left me confused. Can anyone help?
On the 23andme website it defines Unassigned as: Finally, when Ancestry Composition encounters DNA that is very widespread, like a piece of DNA that’s found in Europe, the Near East, and Asia, it will label that DNA “Unassigned."
My results below in Conservative View:
28.8% East Asian & Native American
8.4% East Asian
4.1% Chinese
0.5% Broadly East Asian
15.8% Broadly East Asian & Native American
71.2% Unassigned
My husband, who knows his bio parents have this result in Conservative view:
46% Unassigned
*His parents ethnicity are - dad is Italian and mom is Spanish
When I looked at the 23andme sample of a Chinese person and a Japanese person in Conservative view, their Unassigned percentages were only 2.2% and .01%
Why are my Unassigned results 71.2% in Conservative view?
I know my bio mom is Vietnamese, but I don't know anything about my birth father and these results further adds to my confusion. Can anyone help me? It has been a difficult journey throughout my life to not know who my bio father is and I was hoping the 23andme test would at least help answer my questions about my ethnicity, but so far it has only added to more confusion for me. Thanks for any help you can provide.
What are your more speculative results? On 90% confidence level I have 7.5% unassigned. It gradually goes down to 0.1% unassigned on 50% confidence level.
This is what they say about unassigned DNA: "Sometimes your DNA cannot be assigned to one of the reference datasets used by our algorithm. You may be interested to know that this means that your DNA is unlike most of what we've observed before! As we collect more data and update our algorithm, less of your ancestry should fall into this category."
Basically, you have a lot of very unique DNA that they can find no comparison for. It could mean you have a lot of DNA from a unique and small group that they don't have many samples for, like Native American.
Since there is no European showing in your Conservative results, then your father was definitely not European at all. Likely he was also East Asian. It would be highly unlikely (not impossible) that he was Native American without any European admixture. Where was your mother living when you were conceived?
If your mother is alive and willing to test, you can use her results in 23andMe to phase your own and separate out your paternal DNA.

Apparently you are MOSTLY Asian, maybe Siberian. I suggest you download the raw data and go to Gedmatch and run the data again in there. You can also go to a website which is for Asian people, is Wegene.com/en. They accept raw data from 23andMe.
Maybe 23andme does not have a good data base for Asian DNA to compare with, that is the problem.
Hmm. One of my best friends is Chinese and he did the 23andMe test. His came back 100% East Asian. No problems with his test. Why don't you ask your mother what your father looked like? Might be able to get an idea. I wonder if it could be Pacific Islander DNA. 23andMe doesn't have much of that to compare to.
