Ancestry DNA Puerto Rico over 4700 cousins (Indian, German, American, find)

My wife did her DNA through Ancestry. There were no surprises, other than the massive amount of cousins, most of them 4th or more distant. I did mine (not Puerto Rican) and only got 200. Does anyone know why this is? The only thing I could think of is the diversity of the Puerto Rican ancestors, due to the location of the Island for ship coming to the "new world".
Do you know Latino families? Some have 20 plus kids and then those 20 plus kids have 10 of their own and so on. One of the custodians at work is in his late 60s and he had 19 siblings. The senior admin has 10 siblings and he's in his early 40s.

Not surprised that your wife has a massive amount of matches of 4th or 5th cousins.
I am surprised that you only had 200 matches.
My cousin and I did FTDNA, and we each have about 10,000 matches. Most are 4th or 5th cousins and those matches probably connect hundreds or thousands of years ago.
What are your roots? Curious why you had so few matches.
My roots are- my moms parents -one is Irish, immigrated from Ireland in the 1940's as a teenager. The other grandparent was born here, but both parents immigrated from the same town in Italy in the 1920's(married before they left and had kids there) . My fathers parents...The dad was Mostly of German decent, and also Dutch. the mom was Irish and French Canadian. ....My DNA came back as 39% Ireland, 27% "Europe west" (Germany, France, and the Netherlands in my case) 21% Italy, 6% West Asia, 3% Iberian peninsula, 3% Europe East, 1% Great Britain. No surprises in the findings. I have been fortunate enough to have done my maternal grandmothers DNA, and my maternal great aunt (grandfathers sister).

That's a surprisingly low amount of matches for you. I'm typical White American and here are the match counts on AncestryDNA for myself and relatives

wow. I am amazed at that. Even my great aunt only has 249 matches, my grandmother 189. The only thing I can say is my moms family is very close-both sides. So maybe there is no interest in Ancestry because everyone knows everyone. My maternal grandfathers family moved from Italy to America, and all relatives that followed from Italy moved to the same town and still live there, and so do their kids and now the grandchildren. No one left. Same with my grandmothers side. They moved from the same place in Ireland and they are all in the same place in America.

It may in part be due to where the most of your DNA cousins live.
Ancestry just started offering DNA testing to Canadians a couple of years ago. Ancestry currently only has websites for 9 of the 195 countries in the world - the U.S., Canada, U.K., Germany, France, Australia, Sweden, Italy and Mexico. Perhaps the bulk of your DNA cousins don’t live in any of those 9 countries. Even that’s assuming that Ancestry offers such testing on all 9 web sites,
Edited to add: I wouldn’t be surprised, for example, if DNA testing wasn’t allowed in Germany. The country has strict privacy laws.

Puerto Rico is a tiny island with a 500 year history. They're all related.
I am wondering if Latin Americans are more closely related than North Americans as there weren't really all that many Spaniards in the colonies and the conquistadors must have mated with many Indian women and so there is a limited amount of paternal DNA in the population.

That's amazing. I'm your typical white American as well and I've got 143 pages of matches that adds up to 7150. Of that 7150 only 4 are greater than 4th cousin.
