Unless you are working with an adoption or out of wedlock event, you should be able to easily figure out a 3rd cousin relationship match. As previously suggested, see who else he matches to determine which of your branches he is from.
Then ask him for names of his grandparents or at min his parents. Chances are good for finding an obituary or death record or social security death record or even find a grave for someone that recent. Or if his grandparents are living they might be listed as survivors in an obit of their parents. Then you can use birth dates to find military & census records...eventually linking to your known ancestor.
