After being a longtime U-Haul customer, I have reserved a Penske truck for my upcoming move from Los Angeles to Virginia. Look at the difference in price:

A 17ft U-Haul truck, 865 cubic feet, costs $2,409 before taxes and insurance. 9 days use.

A 16ft Penske truck, 826 cubic feet, costs $1,301 before taxes and insurance. 10 days use.

This seems a no-brainer. Or am I missing something?

PC, there are MANY variables to the rate quotes from rental truck outfits; time of year, how many units they already have in the location that you are both renting from and dropping off. Maybe one comapny is having a special. there could be a number of reasons... Personally, I rather like Penske. Have a smooth move!

Crew Chief, thanks for the post. I called U-Haul yesterday, and they matched Penske's quote and have 30-days free storage. I was shocked that they came down in price over a grand!

After reading the posts here on City-Data though, I'm inclined to still go with Penske. U-Haul has my phone number though, and if they come back with a lower price, I don't know...I've made a lot of moves over the years, and this has got to be the tightest financially.

I rented 2 26' Penskes. One with 90K miles pulling a trailer got 9.4 MPG diesel. The second one had 2K miles, was loaded lighter and had no trailer got 8.5 MPG.

I've been looking at trucks lately while faced with a possible move from NYC to SF according to their sites numbers I came up with approx 768 cu ft in Uhauls 17ft truck and 755 cu ft in Budgets 16ft truck. Anyone know if Budget seats 3 or 2 with a slide to the box?
