We moved cross-country three times, used movers each time and found this helpful:
We always labeled boxes according to the room it came from, not the room it will go to. That way we are familiar with what that room contains and labeling can be more general, like so - MBR Closet, MBR chest contents, MBR linen, etc.
We have a box for Kitchen to Open Immediately - coffee maker, toaster, knives, cutlery (not easy to cut meat with plastic spoons), frying pans
We have a box of Linen to open immediately - one complete set for each bedroom, boxes labeled pillows
Pantry items - napkins, paper products, peanut butter, unopened boxes of snacks, cookies, cereal, oatmeal, breakfast items, etc.
Small electronics to be opened immediately - telephones, chargers, cellphone chargers
Handcarry or in car - toiletries, toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoos, bath soap
Also carry in car all financials-bank statements, investments, tax returns. Anything personal.
OH YEAH - great tip!!!! As a general rule, we keep our most important documents in a fire-proof AND water-proof safety box. If there's a fire, there will also be water...
