Kitty, what amazing memories. I've done my share of travelling, including a stint with carnivals. I love the idea of moseying across leisurely. That would be my preference.
The purpose of this trip is to get the dogs and me there as comfortably and quickly as possible, set up a place to live and begin my new job. I'm bringing enough clothes to take me through a couple of work weeks, minimal. Although they enjoy strolls, the dogs won't be off-leash probably the whole time. I have to get plenty of sleep to drive safely. I hope to give them good walks early morning and be on the road early. 10 hrs is a long day but that's what I'm shooting for.
I'm going to try to have stretch-out room in the car for them.
Random thoughts: Make sure you have a windshield sun shade for your car. If not already done get your vehicle windows tinted. Bring along one bath towel, one coffee mug, a small perculator or tea kettle, scissors, sun screen (put on your neck while you drive), tweezers, bandaids, ibrophen, download podcasts to listen to — I drive thru the Mojave and lots of no radio zones.
Have some destinations of dog parks to stop at along your route. I found it really helpful
for my dogs on long trips.
I thought about that. I know they're going to need to stretch their legs. I don't want to stress them with strange dogs, though. They're 13. Not into play time. I do want to try to incorporate something pleasant.
Hunter -- Nice that you are travelling with 2 "seniors". There are a fair number of "pet-friendly" motels out there. You should be fine.
I understand everyone works 10-hour days out there, in order to have a flex Friday every other week. Your 10-hour driving days will get you all prepped for the longer days. Although you may need a few days to adjust to the time change.
Thanks Holly! That's my schedule now but it's hard to be productive after that 8hr mark.
I'm glad the back seat is roomy. I'm getting the awesome bed I've decided.
Right now they're all mopey, thinking I'm leaving. It's cool when they realize they get to go.
