How many quotes do you get from potential companies for a move? I am about 6 weeks away from another interstate move, and have begun requesting quotes from movers large and small. So far, 4 requests.
Are some of the aspects of those quotes matching or very close? If so, you've probably got more than enough. None of them will be exactly the same, but you should start to see close similarities. Prioritize the aspects of a move that are most important for you.
Right now, the cost of the move is secondary to delivery guarantees. The industry as a whole (especially the nationals) are so backlog with delivery, people are waiting weeks and even a month or more past their scheduled delivery date to get their goods delivered. Companies are quick to pickup, but with the (often unknown to consumers) 30 day rule, your goods are not considered late until 30 days after that delivery date.
The best way to ensure a timely delivery is insist on a guaranteed delivery date with a hefty per diem penalty for late delivery. So if they say your goods will arrive Sept 15 to Sept 23, insist that Sept 25 be the guaranteed date and if they miss that date, they pay you $250 a day for each day (or part) they are late. Since many only pay $50 after the extra late days have past, you need to make your shipment is a financial priority to them. If they won't agree and write that on you Bill of Lading, that tells you they are anticipating potential delivery delays. If they ask you to sign a "transfer note", refuse as that's their way of saying you agreed to warehouse the your goods until they decide to ship it. If it's on a truck, they have another incentive to get that truck in motion.
Lastly, if the company offers online tracking, check your shipment on the day they come to load. If no shipment status is showing, that means they have not even scheduled your load to ship so you know right away they have not even scheduled a move to your destination. You will want to speak to the mover's office and get a guarantee.
