I am finishing up my education and can pretty much work anywhere (medical technology). I don't really have any ties where I am now but am interested in learning more about the South/Southeast or northern west coast. I think I'll be happy anywhere I go but I'm hoping to find someplace with a good balance between city life and well, the opposite I guess. Any advice for a single young professional looking to start an adventure?
I have considered Austin actually, but as winter sets in here I realize I may not like the extended months of hot temperatures there. But I have only heard good things about Austin!
You really need to think about the jobs market in a economy like this. Many of the most desireable places as far as weather really don't have too good a outlook in the future. They have over burdening Taxes ;declinng buiness futures and high cost of living for the foreseeable future.

Yep! Not to mention the 3800 folks that just got laid off at UTMB Galveston will be looking to fill all the local jobs available out there in the Houston area and other UT Hospital branches like Tyler, etc.
I vote Austin or San Antonio.. The 4 months of super hot weather is worth the other 8 months of awesome weather, plus, there are LOTS of jobs in both places. San Antonio has a very low cost of living too

Texas is one of the only areas of the contry with positive job growth. Even if your field offers options everywhere, you don't want to live in a gloomy place where others are being laid off around you, restaurants are empty, etc. Go to where people are upbeat, going out and enjoying life. You'll meet more friends and have more to do.
The hot summers in Austin are overstated. There are plenty of ways to manage the heat. Most of us are not affected by it at all. Come for a weekend visit (Thurs-Mon would be best) and do some exploring. You'll fall in love with the vibe.
Sounds like Nashville, TN area is the pace for you. Medical jobs are plentiful here considering we have a number of hospitals and a huge medical networks. I picked Nashville in 1994 and it was the best move I ever made!
