We have been relocated twice. Our girl was an rescued cat-she was a young kitten -4-6 weeks old-caught in between 2 fences.
She has always been an outdoor/indoor cat.
When we have moved we have kept her inside for 2 weeks but would walk her around the backyard with a harness and a leash.
We never let her stay out if we are not home. When she goes out it is when we are home and she comes in way before dark.

Definately keep the cat indoors for a few weeks and things should go smoothly.

Some cats are very territorial and will ditch you and try to get back to their own territory. I had one that never used a litter box, stayed outside and caught much of her own food. We moved a hundred miles away and at the first opportunity she took off. We never saw her again.

Gradually increase their time outdoors. If you can, put them in a harness & leash and attach it to a clothesline (similar to a dog run/trolley). This way they can get familiar with the sights, sounds, and smells of their new environment. Put something outside that has their smell and yours on it before you set them free entirely, so they have something to 'home in' on when they roam.

And check out the neighborhood yourself and make sure it is safe before you let the cat roam freely.

But be prepared that your cat may not adapt at all to the move and may run away. Its just part of the deal when you decide to keep a 'pet' outdoors.
