The nation's African-American population continued its southward migration over the past decade, shifting a large part of the black middle class from northern states to faster-growing economies of the South.Among 25 big U.S. metro areas with the largest growth in African-American population between 2000 and 2009, 16 were in the South—including Atlanta and Dallas—according to the Census Bureau's American Community Survey. Among the big losers were cities in the North and West, including Detroit, Los Angeles and Cleveland.
The biggest gainer was Atlanta, a magnet for black professionals. Its metro area added about 500,000 African-Americans between the 2000 and 2009 period, and more than twice the next-largest numeric gainer, Dallas, according to an analysis of Census data by William H. Frey, a demographer at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. Over the same period, the share of Atlanta's 25-and-over black population that had college degrees increased to 24.6% in 2009 from 21.5% in 2000.
edit:
SF and SD lost too, what is up with Cali losing all these black people?
I know latinos hate blacks in LA, it's an explanation..Many blacks are low-income workers, maybe cali cities are too expensive for them ?
But yeah, blacks are mostly in the South, and this part will grow because they migrate there from other parts of the country + African immigrants (they love Georgia, Texas is an appreciated destination too) + Haitian immigrants are growing very fast in Florida)
Thought that was confined to socal? SF is losing blacks too
more than Detroit and Chicago combined.
The top 10 losers were
1. NOLA
2. LA
3. NY
4. SF
5. Detroit
6. Chicago
7. San Diego
8. Cleveland
9. Youngstown
10. Buffalo
NOLA shouldn't be on there, it is an anomaly, they lost like 200k blacks in one week. They are moving back to the south for 3 reasons, it is cheaper, job opportunities and that is where a lot of their family is originally from. They would have never gone north / west to begin with if they didn't have to. There is a black exodus going on in CA and the Rust Belt.
Rust Belt = Blue CA = Red
1. NOLA
2. LA
3. NY
4. SF
5. Detroit
6. Chicago
7. San Diego
8. Cleveland
9. Youngstown
10. Buffalo

yeah, that is what I thought too, but man, look at LA.
It is like a hurricane hit LA and affected only the black people.

In Chicago blacks dropped and white/hispanic/asian all went up.
