I was born and raised in New York (The Bronx, and Brooklyn). I currently reside in Virginia and if a career situation presented itself, I would be back in a heartbeat. Plan B would be to relocate somewhere between Washington DC and Connecticut.
Hard call between living in NY (native) or CA (transplant). California leads solely on weather.
Both states offer beautiful scenery, oceans, mountains, beaches, down to earth, proactive and honest people.
I lived in Missouri for two years, and although the cost of living was very attractive, I could not stand the place and decided to move back to CA.
I lived in Nebraska for 12 years, and just moved to the Seattle, Washington area just about 14 months ago. Best move I could have ever imagined- so much better in almost every way here. The only thing I miss about Nebraska are the severe Spring storms- the storm geek in me will always miss that.
I am originally from Brooklyn as well. We moved to North Carolina in 2006, and we hate it here.
We are trying to sell our house and move to Pennsylvania because we just don't like North Carolina. We have given it a chance; we've been here five and a half years, and we started out liking it, but now, we just can't wait to get out. My oldest sister, who is in her thirties, moved here to NC with us, and in December of 2010 moved back to New York. She loves it up there more than ever, and doesn't want to come back to NC. I guess some places suit people more than others.
I personally do not like the South.
I've lived in NYC, in DC, on Long Island (2 different times), in Maryland and now in Tennessee.
I liked every place I have ever lived at the time in my life when I lived there. You know, some places are better for a kid, some are better for a young single, some better for a part of a married couple, some better for a particular stage in my career and now a place that's better for me in retirement.
I came to (or should I say "went to") Colorado from Oklahoma.
I didn't realize how much Oklahoma sucks until I moved to Colorado. Wait, let me re-phrase that. I didn't realize how much Oklahoma sucks until I "moved back" (college) from Colorado. Ugh, biggest mistake of my life.
But it's okay, only 3 months and I'll be back in Colorado for good - attending CU next year!
I grew up in upstate New York but have lived my adult life in Minneapolis. I like Minneapolis a lot better; there is more to do, the culture is more dynamic and cosmopolitan and the people are more openminded.
I also am originally from Upstate NY and now live in St Paul. I agree with your assessment except for one thing: NY state has much more natural beauty than MN does (tho MN is no slouch!).
