My husband and I have decided that we want to leave Los Angeles. However, we cannot decide where. We want to get away from LA while our 5 kids are young and make a nice home for them where we can raise them. I have a fantasy life in mind and while this combination probably does not exist, it would be nice to be as close as possible:

-Small (I want to know my neighbors and have that community feel without being in a town so small we get bored after a week)
-A lot of land
-Very nice/picturesque houses (I am an interior designer so I like having a nice house)
-Large houses (large enough for my family of 7)
-Safe
-Either a few private school options or exceptional public schools
-near water(lake or ocean) (i know this is a long shot but I can dream )
-price is not an issue
-We really like the east coast (we have family there so it would be nice to be close) but it is not limited to that.

I really like Westport CT but we want to find some other options first.

You might check out Marblehead, Massachusetts. It's on a small peninsula overlooking Massachusetts Bay/Salem Harbor/Atlantic Ocean. The public schools are excellent and it's a safe family-friendly town, just 20 miles from Boston. The housing stock is beautiful and many have waterviews or are actually waterfront.

Westport is one of the best places to raise a family in the United States, and is right outside of New York City. I'd say if you can afford it, go for it.
