Maybe you should not get your information from fictional TV shows. Baltimore has a great urban scene and nightlife for a city its size.
I've been to Baltimore dozens of times...I don't get any information from fiction - fiction is imaginary. But The Wire was realistic fiction and a pretty accurate view of parts of Baltimore.
Urban scene and nightlife don't exactly translate to "hip". I'm very familiar with what Baltimore has to offer.
Miami point blank. I don't know why people deny the fact that it's in the south. It may be a city that is predominately hispanic but it is part of the south.
Considering my admiration for the South, I would like to spend a weekend at some fun US city below Washington DC. Here's my requirements:
*Bustling Nightlife: lots of bars and clubs to enjoy my nights.
*Metro: need some way to get from place to place.
*Lots of cultural activities: parks, monuments and sights to enjoy my day. Better yet if they got a tour bus for the city.
*Not too expensive to find accomodation.
Love to hear the positives and negatives of the cities that come to mind. Here is a couple of cities I suspect might have what I am looking for: Atlanta, Nashville, Jacksonville, New Orleans, Austin, Houson, Dallas.
It depends on what you mean by "hip".
Some people look to what happens around Boston, or New York, or San Francisco, and whatever southern city emulates that must be "hip".
I take the view that "hip" is organic, it is not something you import from another place. Therefore I have to say that New Orleans hands down is the hippest southern city.
Miami is worthy of mention, although I think there's room for debate over how culturally southern it is.
Back in the day Tulsa had a lot of distinct character/culture from art & architecture, excellent museums, to being the hub of country's distinct Western-Swing sound @ Cain's Ballroom.
Tulsa's fallen off a bit in recent years, but the Red Dirt scene (country infused with Southern rock...kinda like a grittier rockabilly) has at least kept the music vibrant and cool.
probably miami, dc...baltimore. atl. one of those four.
i used to date a girl from miami that was pretty southern...she said stuff like:
chirrdren (as hard as she tried she never pronounced the word correctly.)
