Other than that, there are a couple of small local chains.

But HEB is one of the best priced grocers I've ever seen, and their store brand stuff can be top notch. I remember they had a lawsuit against Walmart a couple of years back disputing Walmart's advertising claim that shoppers saved shopping at Walmart vs. their local grocer.
So what you're saying is, HEB is cheaper and dirtier than Walmart?

There's probably more, but those seem to be the major ones.
In the Queens Borough of NYC, one can find Trader's Joe, Key Food, Met Food, Pioneer, C-Town, Associated Supermarkets, Pathmark, Costco, Target & Aldi.

Man, it's so weird moving to Seattle from Atlanta. Kroger dominates Atlanta, and the only other market there is probably Publix. If you aren't Publix or Kroger in Atlanta, you don't matter! Like at all. Maybe we can count Whole Foods and Trader Joe.

I was so surprised that Seattle has crappier grocery stores, and less of them. Tons of QFCs and Safeways in the city. Both of them pretty bad. Wish there were more Fred Meyer (has the same parent company as Kroger), but don't see as many of them.

Central/North Central Indiana we have Kroger,Marsh,Martins,Aldis and Save-A-Lot. We also have Meijer's but that is more of a super Walmart type of store but higher end merchandise.

The only one that matters... Wegmans. I've never been to an HEB, but I'd be overly confident stacking Wegmans up against it.

yes, Wegman's consistently gets national recognition for being a best place to work and all around one of the best supermarket chains in the U.S. AFAIK H-E-B is well-loved in Texas but doesn't get that level of recognition.

Sometimes yes H-E-B does a pretty good job catering specifically to the demographics of the neighborhood(s) they will serve, in both store design and what they sell. Sometimes they can be pretty gnarly though...

Never seen any of the 3 in the title in my area. Within a couple miles of my house there is: H-E-B, Whole Foods (the flagship), Sprouts, Central Market (upscale, owned by H-E-B), Randall's, Wheatsville Co-op (local). Then a Trader Joe's will be adjacent to the Whole Foods HQ sometime next year.
