I am currently living in NYC with my son and family. I was born and raised here and I am now 21 and can not afford to stay here and support myself and my son. My son's father lives in Charlotte, NC for the time being. We want to move somewhere that is very affordable(Rent:800 or less), has good schools, and good job prospects. However, I don't want to be too too far from NYC because I would still want to come back on some holidays. However, I can see being a good 9 or 10 hr drive away. Do you have any ideas of which cities would fit my budget and expectations? Thanks =)

Dutchess County is right on your doorstep. Try Staatsburgh/Hyde Park, Redhook

What can you do for work? Depending on work skills/education, many Upstate NY areas would fit.

Why not look at the Charlotte area? Seems like that would fit the bill.
