What cities are "too big for their britches." Cities that think they are bigger and more important than they really are? Do you think this is what makes cities provincial?

The simplest answer to that IMO are the biggest cities in the United States. Chicago and New York in particular. While no doubt big enough they can brag about it and can truly show a great importance to the country and world, moreso than many other cities, they brag about it enough to the point where to someone like me it feels as if they are telling me that my city or any other city doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, which is false. So basically, I feel like a lot of the people I meet from these cities are justified to their behavior somewhat, but not to the point where they put down other cities to make their point, and even act like the interesting parts of the country end at their city limits. That kind of thinking to me is arrogant and incredibly ignorant. However, I will say that you can find plenty of people who act just like this about their cities in any part of the country, and that irritates me just as much, if not more. When I hear someone from Chicago say their city is the greatest, I respond with "I don't agree, but I could easily see why you'd make that claim, as it truly is a one-of-a-kind city." If I hear somebody, from say, Indianapolis or Columbus claim this, then I just get really annoyed. As nice as these cities may be, why anyone would claim these cities to be superior to all others is truly beyond me unless they are natives and truly despise anywhere that doesn't feel like home.

I'll second that!

And I'd like to add Atlanta to the list. Between Coca-Cola and Ted Turner, Atlanta tends to overreach itself (the sterling hosting job they did during the Olympic Games rather proves the point). And despite its stubborn insistence on wanting to be considered a major league city, attendance in the various pro sports indicates that Atlantans just don't care.

The city too big for its britches by a longshot, I think, is Boston. God do I get tired of hearing how smart they are because of all their colleges. And Harvard isn't even IN Boston, but in Cambridge, across the river. And after being a pro sports doormat for years, they take a few champopnships and try to Lord it over everyone. All those smart people never told them, I guess, about reverting to the mean. In time, Boston teams will be doormats once again.

Let's face it. Anyplace that nicknames itself "The Hub" -- as if the rest of the world spins around it -- is showing too much ego to make up for the fact that it has too little.

Not for nothing, but we call it the Hub for irreverent purposes.

San Francisco. In spite of all evidence to the contrary, there is this persistent belief that it is the "New York City of the west coast." I'm talking about people believing this IRL.

How absurd.

The first places that come to my mind are cities that are "top 15" largest in the US like Columbus or Jacksonville or San Antonio yet really they are not that big compared to metro areas and even the city themselves feel small compared to much smaller cities lik Miami or Atlanta.

The first city that came to my mind though was Phoenix. What does it offer?

The business, medical, dental, and public health schools are in Boston as are the football stadium and many other athletic facilities.

Dubuque. I can't count how many arrogant Dubuquers come in here with their cocky attitude of being the "Paris of Iowa" or the "Bronx of the Midwest"
