Anyway, if you live on LI, you alway can get on the train and go into MANHATTAN where the big money is. What is the equivalent to NYC in Florida that you can commute to?

Someone mentioned water prices. I pay $125 a month here with 2 less people living in the household. All that sun, and no rain, makes water very expensive.

Then there is health insurance. When I worked in Hauppauge, I covered my college age daughter, AND my husband living in Florida, for $110 a month for medical, dental and eye. I covered my husband because my plan was better and cheaper than his employer's plan in Florida. Want to know what it is? $125 a month for just medical just for him with a $2,500 deducticle. So he has to spend OVER $2,500 on doctor visits before insurance kicks it. His scripts deductible is $450. Mine is $160 a month for me and my dedictible is $3,500 and $450. So, unless you have major surgery and take a lot of drugs, YOU pay for everything. No, it was better on LI. Probably all the OLD PEOPLE in Florida cause medical costs to be sky high.

I still say it is a wash because while some costs are lower, others are MORE expensive, so the savings will only be nominal. It just depends on what kind of lifestyle you want. I prefer 4 Seasons so I prefer LI.
In addition to that it is not the norm in FL to even be offered health benefits through work. I have talked to several people who work in jobs(such as offices) to find they have no health insurance.

In states like NY, CA, TX, etc. it is a given that with most jobs you're offered health insurance, not the case in FL.

Even those who work as CNAs dealing with the sick and elderly in nursing homes, no health insurance. Less than $10 an hour and no health coverage even though you subject yourself to illness everyday.

But it doesn't snow.

It's called an HSA and you better get used to it, because it doesn't matter where you live. the company I worked for on LI has the same thing as the company I work for in FL now. No difference in costs.

You can live close enough to any city and not feel like your living in Queens. BTW, LI is more industrial than financial/admistrative, where do people who work on the manufacturing floor go in Manhattan to make the big bucks. Also, do you know how much it costs to take the LIRR these days?

Someone mentioned water prices. I pay $125 a month here with 2 less people living in the household. All that sun, and no rain, makes water very expensive. Ok you pay alot for water in Florida. How much is your heating bill up there....oil or gas?

I wish I had your husband's plan when we lived on LI. We used my wifes company which was located in Melville. They're a furtune 500 company. We paid 3 times that, plus a $900 dollar penalty to keep me on it because it was still better then the company I worked for. HSA's look out for them. Once you hear that your company is self insuring, run for the hills.

It's not even close. Try no state income tax, car insurance is less, Sales tax is less, I don't have an MTA surcharge on my cell phone bill, gas taxes are less, there's barely any heating bills, do I even need to say anything about property taxes, there's barely any tolls in the state (have you gone over the Verrazano lately), no car inspections.......could keep going

[quote=seain dublin;21320108]Really? FL pays 46th out of the 50 states in regards to teacher's pay. Nurses are some of the lowest paid in the nation.

My advise to you, don't bring up Teacher's pay on a LI forum.

Of all the characteristics of Long Island (both good and bad) relating to beauty and aesthetics - I can't imagine anyone on this board agreeing with you that Long Island lacks any natural beauty due to all the condo's here - maybe you just didn't take your meds today.

No I'm not. A biotech firm called Jackson Laboratory just said no to FL and is going to expand in CT. This is the second time FL has been at the losing end in recent months when it comes to bringing in better paying technical jobs.

FL is and will remain a service industry driven economy and because of that will lag behind most of America in any type of recovery.

It's all subjective really. No one can factually convince me that LI/NYC is better than Florida or vice-versa. NOT HAPPENIN. ALL IS SUBJECTIVE.
