They are fine states. Love the scenery of Northern Alabama. I do not prefer them, though and I do not want to live in either state.

Therein lies the difference. The media unfairly targets these two states. Even shows depicting home videos of Alabamans will play banjo music when showing people who are suburban and show no signs of being a "hillbilly".
I really wish people would give us credit for having minds of our own. I don't like MS, and the media has nothing to do with my dislie of the place. The state, and how this are in this state, make me dislike it without any help from this mysterious, mind warping media.

You're a young man who likes the idea of big cities. You'd probably dislike Wyoming or Montana, or Vermont or Maine. The state of a young man in his early 20s. A temporary state of mind for most, I might add.

What is so bad about Mississippi and Alabama? Nothing, in my opinion. They are two fine states.

I understand you may be more liberally inclined, and you may not like the fact that these two states are filled with a lot of conservative, religious people, but so what! Why does that make it a bad state? Why does that justify you bringing it up for ridicule in threads that having nothing to do with the state?

It's about time that people got with the times and realized that both of these states are wonderful, beautiful states filled with great people.
I believe it's more along the lines of high poverty rankings and low education levels and lack of jobs. This is why people make fun of the two states and they are all facts.

Of course, North Carolina is just as southern, but you have Charlotte and the Research Triangle and LOTS of good universities for instance and good schools throughout the state. Big difference in those 2 states.

To top it off they love SEC football and Nascar..... two sports I stay FAR away from.

diverse job opportunity: Alabama is known for NASA, medicine (UAB), steel-mills (granted most are gone), forestry, agriculture, fishing, and almost anything else you can find. Sure, the opportunities may not be as numerous as you'd find in a city like Atlanta or Houston, but they're there.

Opportunity for young people: Hand in hand with job opportunities.
Bham does not even have 2 Fortune 500 companies. Most decent sized cities have as many if not more fortune 500 companies and MS and AL combined.

Quote:
Urban-Living: You can find such in the Birmingham area. Sure, it's not what one would find in NYC or Chicago, but very few places in the U.S. offer such.
Bham is as urban as a redneck riding a John Deere with his mullet flowing in the wind (which one would probably see in Bham)

Quote:
Public Transportation: All larger-sized cities have bus service. .
First, Bham is not large. Second, their PT is awful.

Nightlife: Can be found anywhere.
Sure, nightlife can be found anywhere, but what is the quality of it?

Mississippi is known for their casinos in Biloxi, Gulfport, and Tunica. Plenty of fun to be had in southside Birmingham, or the gulf coast area.
Among the hick community?

Liberals: They're there. They're called black people.
First, I lean Republican so I am not bashing Bham for this. However, most blacks vote Democrat and this is a proven fact. Democrat does not equal liberal. Most blacks are democrat, not liberal.

I believe you have me mixed up with someone else...

I'm a forty-five year old woman who's been in many states and cities of many sizes. I've seen my share of the world, and know my own mind, thank you very much.

Unfortunately, I wasted my time and hard earned money visiting these greased up poverty stricken states. I found them both to be boring and I felt like Joe Pesci in My Cousin Vinny.

Not that I'd want to live in either state, but I've certainly noticed that it's popular to bash them. Take some "progressives" in the Northeast for example, their idea of cultural diversity includes immigrants from Vietnam but not people into country music and auto racing.

I didn't find them to be greased up, I found my money well spent. But if you watch "My Cousin Vinny" again, you could tell Vinny wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed, I wouldn't compare myself to him.
