Btw, you are painting all southerners with a broad brush. Isn't that being "judgemental"?

If somebody made a stupid comment like, "All gays have AIDS." you would be in an uproar.

I'm a West Coaster and a liberal, yet I agree with you. I'm sick of people bashing entire regions of millions of people.

Look at the obesity rates. By and large, most states are fairly similar. A few percentage points difference is not a big difference.

Highest pornography viewing? Really? Where'd you come up with that?

Most Teen Pregnancies: Correlates with higher black population. By the way, it's not the highest rate of the states.

Low Education Levels: Correlates with higher black population

"Racism": That's the most horrible thing in the word. By the way, that's a media-generated falsehood. Alabama is no different than any other state in modern-times.

"anti-gay". No. They simply do not approve of homosexual marriage, as does every state that has put it to vote.

They are as close as any part of the United States can get to archaic, barbaric 3rd world cesspools like Iran. Essentially, southern states like Miss. and Alabama are still living in the 19th Century.

That's why they get so much ridicule.
Oh yes, Alabama, with its beautiful suburbs, manufacturer of Mercedes, beautiful white sand beaches with towering hotels, NASA, and one of the top medicine hospitals is third world. Seriously, are you that ignorant?

These states consistantly rank the worst of all 50 for everything I mentioned and do nothing to change it because they enjoy their rebel culture. Bottom 5 if not worse overall year after year after year.
Low education rankings has to do with the very high black population. Do people have to spell it out?

High obesity levels? Have you not noticed how fat the entire country is? Just look at the rates. There's not much difference.

High poverty rankings? Not the highest, and it correlates with a very high black population. Every state with Alabama's demographic would fair the same.

High smoker ratings? I don't think so. Virginia, North Carolina, and Kentucky are higher.

Most Wal-Marts? No. That'd probably be California or Texas. By the way, what do you have against Wal-Mart? I know, "they're bloody capitalists".

Their "rebel culture" doesn't have anything to do with it. A high black population does.

Do you not take the time to read?

As I've stated, people on city date forum equate Democrat election results with showing how liberal an area is. Those who vote Democrat in Alabama are generally black, hence they're the "liberals". Of course some of them are socially conservative, I was simply making a point with regard to their voting habits, as people on city data like to equate voting with ideology.

I have just about nothing against Mississippi and/or Alabama...my mother's family came from Mississippi, and it is home to some of the friendliest, most down to earth people in America...it may have gotten a black eye from a lot of stuff that went on in the past, but the WHOLE STATE should not be vilified continuously due to this

I have visited Alabama, and found it to be a beautiful state, also full of accomodating folk as well...

But where you went off the rails here, was the nonsesne you posted about 'low education rankings having to do with the very high black population'...I'm sorry if you seem to have some ongoing, sweaty-armpit vendetta against black folk, but rest assured, there are enough of us who are educated and living productive lives, in Mississippi, Alabama, and a lot of other places as well, who have learned to basically ignore divisive junk like that...

Maybe if you're lucky, and you ask nicely enough, some of them will take you by the hand, lead you back to your root cellar, and nail you back in
it so you don't have to run screaming every time a black person within 10 feet of you blows his nose or has the audacity to breathe your air...it's 2011, time out for all that juvenile hatred, already

Ok in case you haven't already noticed, StarsandStripes is a bigot. I also would like to remind everyone on C-D that he or she in no way represents how the vast majority of people in Alabama think.

As I mentioned Nevada and New Mexico sometimes "get off easy", in a way, on reputation. A few sources I found put them as similar or above Alabama's rate of teen-birth-rate. (Although not above Mississippi)

Map: Teen birth rates across the U.S. - msnbc.com

Also part of why the Deep South has a high teen-birth-rate is that they don't abort as much as some states. In particular Mississippi's rate is one of the lowest in the nation.

Abortion Rate - Kaiser State Health Facts

Despite that, if we want to bring race into it, whites in Alabama and Mississippi apparently have a high teen-birth-rate compared to whites elsewhere. This is likely due to the "less abortion" issue, but still blaming the issue solely on blacks is unfair. Going by that source, at least, the teen-birth-rate among white Alabamans is higher than that among white Nevadans and white New Mexicans. Although Arkansas looks to have the highest rate of teen-birth among whites. (In fairness "teen birth" is, to me, slightly misleading as there are parts of the country where 18-year-olds are still seen as adults. I have a nephew in Arkansas who got married at 19, but she wasn't pregnant. The idea that adulthood doesn't start until about 28 is not really universal)

As I've indicated I have issues with the "over 18" and going by birth-rate rather than pregnancy rate you might wonder why ain't I linking to more sources, particularly sources that deal with under-18 pregnancy rate. Well because I haven't found any yet. Most were dealing with teen-birth, not teen-pregnancy, which is going to preference more pro-abortion states. (I'm using the controversial term "pro-abortion", which I usually avoid, to refer to states where people are more likely to encourage abortion as the solution to teen-pregnancy.) And my issue with including 18-19-year-olds is going to sound a bit backward. The best I can get is to compare the abortion and birth rate lists, which is flawed as the abortion rate is overall not just teens. Still placing those two in I think Nevada and New Mexico might well be worse with teen pregnancy than Mississippi. While Maine, Massachusetts (high abortion rate, but teen-birth is so low it might not explain it all), Minnesota, New Jersey, North Dakota, Utah, Vermont, and Wisconsin might be among the lowest for teen pregnancy.

Anyway Nevada is also high for divorce and other things. Possibly no one expects good of Nevada, but New Mexico I think has a better image despite also having dismal figures for many of these things.

Ok so to the people who say it's not Alabama's attitude then what is it? What is keeping this state from climbing out of poverty? I think the only thing that can hold you back is yourselves. Alabama has the potential to be a booming southern state if it gets it priorities straight. NASA is only the beginning of what could come in Alabama. Alabama has plenty of land simply untouched.
