Thank you so much for all your input. I will look at all the areas mentioned and hopefully find something that looks like it will fit what I'm looking for.

Well, I'm a single mom and up until a year ago, was also a retail manager for many years with a major department store.

Unless you mean you're a District Manager, or Store Manager or something, you will be facing the same issue I did when choosing where to live with my children; cost of living. Retail management jobs do not exactly pay for a wide choice of options when choosing an area with an affordable cost of living, unless maybe you're with Nordstroms or something.

We lived in Montana for awhile, but I just couldn't keep up there financially, and the heating bills that come with all that snow get very costly. A retail manager's pay also did not afford me the opportunity to buy my own home, which was important to me. We are now back in North Carolina where we started out, and I hate the hot humid summers and LACK of snow here, but the cost of living here in the south, and the cost of homes and property is much cheaper than out west or up North in the New England area, where we would probably like the weather, and other aspects, better than here.

Good luck, I hope you find your spot. I'm still searching.

To the OP. i would also recommend the Indianapolis area.
Has nice winters as you requested. But Indy also has the nations most affordable housing market and lowest cost of living of any major city.
Plus 75% of the United States population is within a days drive and our city is famous for hosting large events like the Super Bowl and Indy 500/brickyard 400.
Plus were the fastest growing city/metro in the midwest with a very positive job outlook.
