Perhaps, but there are other companies that have popped up in the area and the other 2 still have a presence in the area.

The Kodak legacy will always make Rochester well known, even as the company largely becomes irrelevant. It was still one of the "Great American Companies" for over a century and a brand that everyone knows the world over. That will probably be the case for the foreseeable future as well as old photos/memorabilia will bare the Kodak brand. B&L and Xerox are pretty well known companies too (yes, I know Xerox is headquartered in Connecticut but it still employs more people in Rochester than anywhere else and Rochester is the seat of it's R&D department). UofR is a great and growing school and a solid replacement as the backbone of the Rochester economy, but Kodak will still be more nationally and globally recognized and associated with Rochester for a long time.

Rochester is also fairly historically significant for a city its size with its significant role in the abolitionist and woman's suffragist movements (with both Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony having lived here)

Sorry, but Rochester is not well known outside of NY State..... I know it is painful for natives, but it is the truth

Syracuse is much better known because of the Orange basketball team being in the tournament every year and Buffalo is even more so because of the NFL

It may not be fair, but it is what it is

Kodak made the quality of life great up there before, but people have largely forgotten about the company nationally and where it was located

To some extent, maybe Daytona Beach, FL
- famous raceway. Birthplace of auto racing
- famous college Spring Break and Motorcycle destination
- the longest beach that you can legally drive on for 20 miles
- headquarters of golfing association
- claims to have the US's largest flea-market

Williamsburg, VA
- arguably the foremost living-history town in the world (although traffic is declining)
- home to Busch Gardens, consistently voted the US's most attractive theme park
- home to golfing retirement communities

Hershey, PA
- world-famous chocolate factory, a tourist attraction
- well-known orphanage
- professional Hockey team
- has popular amusement park, and also a Zoo
- historic Hotel with rose garden

Santa Fe, NM. It's smaller than Albuquerque, yet
- has its own Symphony
- has its own Opera company
- is a world famous Artist colony and tourist mecca
- was the abbreviated name of a major Railroad (Freight cars are still labeled with its name today)
- has the oldest public building in the USA

What about very regionally important cities?

Billings, MT, city of 100k with a metro of 150k, but the biggest city for 550 miles in any direction makes it very important to surrounding areas.

Austin, TX
New Orleans (culturally, maybe?)
Denver

Perhaps, but I wouldn't underestimate the Kodak brand, as many people are familiar with it. Good point about the Abolitionist and Suffragist movements too, I'minformed.
