I'd be interested in what people think are the best art museums in the U.S. outside New York, and why you think they're the best. Name up to three, maybe.
I don't know all of those, it seems like a pretty good list. But I would certainly substitute the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) for the DeYoung Museum.

My favorite is the Philadelphia Art museum. I love the knight armor collection and Asian art (specifically the Japanese tea garden setting) there. National Gallery of Art in DC is another good one.
Not limited to one museum but the consolidated collection of art museums and galleries in Santa Fe, NM give it one hell of an endowment of art for a little city.

I kind of hope this thread is about personal favorites of CD users rather than citations of lists by critics or others.
My personal favorite is the Gilcrease in Tulsa. Excellent condition of art, artifacts, and archival materials, beautiful grounds, and not-too-big. A visit to the Gilcrease doesn't leave you with "museum exhaustion", but rather a joyful feeling of content. I really love the Gilcrease - I've been there so often that some of the collection have become beloved old friends.
I also love the Seattle Art Museum. I started going back in the old days when it was in its old building, and I have such good memories of days spent there. The new building is more sterile, but maybe more exciting? Plus there are lots of good special programs. I still miss the old place, though.
It's hard just to pick just one more. I think instead of the Art Institute in Chicago (see how I snuck that in?) I'm going to pick the Walker in Mpls, because it has become more than a building and has allowed the surrounding space to also be an expression of individual creativity. Any museum that allows people to be more than just static viewers (or button pushers - this isn't a wish for more technological interaction) is great in my book.
Forgot to say that the Gilcrease has one of the very best "visual storage" spaces in any museum - for those who just like to see stuff instead of only curated exhibits.
I've no use for your precious art museums after they threw me out of the Art Institute of Chicago while just a child. And, they kept my hammer! Bonk! Bonk!

Outside of NY, collectively I would say DC. The collections at the Smithsonian museums, National Gallery of Art and the Phillips Collection are unrivaled by any other city.
I'm a fan of the architecture of the Smithsonians...
