I'm fairly new to the West Coast. However I've found the Seattle jazz scene lacking. As I've gotten older, I'm not so much into heavy metal or rap anymore. When I want to see live music, I generally want to see live jazz. However I've found that Jazz Alley in Seattle has too much contemporary. I guess I would like to know a place where I can find some more traditional jazz. I'm mainly a fan of Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane. Or does such a jazz club even exist anymore outside of Jazz Standards in NYC?

Yoshi's in Oakland/San Francisco is a good place to start.
Oakland's the original club; it started as an exclusively jazz club and has since expanded to include other genres as well as stand up comedy (Dave Chappelle, Black Comedy Competition Festival, etc). The main focus of the club/restaurant is still jazz though.
Hmmm. At Jazz Alley I've seen Eartha Kitt, Ernestine Anderson, Mccoy Tyner, Marion Mcpartland, Roberta Gamberini, .Amad Jamal, Wayne Shorter and many more. Also check out Tula's and New Orleans Creole Restaurant. In October check out the Earshot Jazz Festival. During the summer months there's jazz festivals all over the PNW. The Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Mount Hood, Port Townsend and a few other festivals are all alot of fun.
I've heard of Yoshi's. I definitely want to check that one out. I've never been to the Bay Area, is it is pretty easy to get to from downtown San Francisco? I know it is in Oakland, but how far is Oakland from San Fran? I probably do need to hit up Portland first though, since it's a lot closer from where I am.
Seattle has had a long history, but not sure of the scene right now. Ray Charles, not a traditional jazz artist, spent some formulative time in Seattle. Kenny G. is a Seattle native and also spent some formulative time in his home city.

I'm not a big fan of the type of jazz Kenny G plays. I generally try to avoid smooth and contemporary jazz. I like artist more on the style of Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, Canonball Aderly, Charles Mingus, and Miles Davis
