Heading to VA with the family in August and I'm trying to figure out if I should take an extra day and stop overnight someplace where the kids (7 and 8) would have fun rather than just head straight there in one go. I don't want to deal with city and congestion so that crosses off NYC and DC. We did the Hershey tour last time we passed through and that was all right (for my wife anyway )

Any suggestions?

Drive down through New Jersey, and take the Cape May ferry over to Lewes, Delaware. Someplace in that area would be a nice way to kill a day.

Or stay in Cape May for a night. Find a beautiful Victorian mansion turned into a bed and breakfast, or a hotel to stay at.

This year is the 150th aniversery of the battle of Gettysburg. The battlefield is well preserved and the museum they have to the battle is second to none. Also the town itself is a really nice place to visit. You can easily spend a day in that area, really you could spend several. It would be great way to introduce children to the history of our country. Also detouring into PA would take you west of the city congestion you wish to avoid.

What about Mount Vernon?

George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate, Museum & Gardens

And Annapolis, MD is a charming little town with several very good museums, and you could also take the kids sailing!
