Walmart is building a two-level store (along with Publix) on top of a parking garage across the street from dorms at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Not only are they providing ample room for pedestrians, they're also including a train depot for a current sightseeing train and future commuter rail.

I know the one here has like 37 registers, of which maybe two are open at any given day no matter what time of year it is.

They are taking that "keep people in the store" philosophy and squeezing every drop they can from it. It's been rumored that kids have been born and raised to the age of 5 while waiting in line before they finally walk out the exit door and see the world for the first time...and it's a beautiful parking lot of cars and shopping carts.

There is a multilevel Walmart/Sam's Club in Honolulu that appears to be pedestrian friendly.

I believe all Walmarts are designed with pedestrians in mind. How else do you expect shopping carts to be moved around the store?
