of a major city, somewhere where the economy is reasonable and you are close to poker rooms (less than one hour drive). Cost of living is a factor, like I'd like to get a 3 br house for around 1300, and in the obligatory good school district. Does this suburb exist? Silver spring, Maryland?

I've visited KC, Denver and Vegas in recent months. Vegas is ok, though not a slam dunk. It just doesn't seem family oriented enough, though I think Henderson seems well layed out.

How about either the NYC or Philly suburbs, along the Jersey Shore? Ocean, Atlantic, Cape May and maybe even Monmouth Counties can bring you within an hour, give or take depending on where exactly you are, of AC. Anywhere on the barrier islands, or on the other side of the bay but relatively close to the coast still would count as Jersey Shore in this sense, I'm not just talking beach towns. A town near a beach town would work.

NJ overall has great schools but it depends on the town. South Jersey tends to be a bit more depressed and less wealthy than Northern NJ overall but again it depends on where you are. The worst area for that may be SW Jersey, anyway, the coastal areas are generally okay. Southern NJ is less expensive than Northern NJ, but shore towns can be more expensive the closer you are to water because it is more desirable land. Just a suggestion.

Vegas has a lot of families living there. I mean, there's 2 million people living there! They don't all work for hotels and casinos! Summerlin and Henderson are great for families I think. I know Henderson is the nicest community in the Vegas metro and I have friends that moved to/are from Summerlin. I'm assuming the schools are good though since most higher end communities usually come with good schools. But we all know the Vegas economy isn't great.

Reno could be an option. I know nothing about it besides that cost of living is great there and they have casinos.

Actually, I just checked online the best poker rooms in the country. Caesar's Indiana came up and it's close to Louisville, KY. Louisville is a great city! I can't comment on the good school district, but I know it's a great place to raise a family.

I think you need more specifics. What line of work are you in? What size city do you want? Climate preferences?

Didn't really want to put too many variables. Ideally, I would love to live in the DC/Baltimore area, but I think what I want is out of my price range.

I was thinking Sacramento, but have read the poker is limited there and the economy isn't doing well. But it is California, and that can be both good and bad.

I'm flexible on weather, but ideally, the DC weather should be perfect. I'm from Texas.

NJ really isn't that badly priced depending on where you go. I've never been there but have friends and family there. Generally Monmouth County is very nice.

Generally, the further from the city, the less expensive it gets. At the same time, the closer to the ocean or bay in New Jersey, the more expensive it gets. That's why I recommended looking at areas near, but not right on, the coast. Good luck with your search.

Well since there are so many, I decided to look at what others consider to be the best.
Wall Street Poker: My top 10 poker rooms in the U.S. (an ongoing list)

Based on that, I'd say Vegas or NJ. They included one in Indiana so I'd say the Chicago suburbs also.

LA has a lot, but you won't be able to rent a good neighborhood on that budget in LA.

Actually, there is Turning Stone Casino in Upstate NY between Syracuse and Utica. It is possible to pay that much for a 3 bedroom in a suburb in both of those areas. While you need to check the property taxes, the home prices are below the national median price as a whole in both areas. In Syracuse, I'd look int Eastern suburbs(Jamesville-DeWitt, Fayetteville-Manlius and East Syracuse-Minoa schools), which tend to be the most affluent in the area(especially much of the first 2 school districts) or relatively fast growing Cicero.

In the Utica-Rome area, look into the Whitesboro school district, Clinton or New Hartford, which is that area's most affluent suburb and has some of the best public schools in Upstate NY by some publications. In between both cities, but still in the Syracuse metro, Chittenango, Cazenovia and maybe Canastota may work, but are more small town than suburban.

There are a couple of casinos in the Buffalo area as well, with some Canadian casinos nearby. If you look into that area, the Lewiston-Porter and Niagara-Wheatfield school districts near Niagara Falls could work. Wheatfield is the fastest growing town in the Buffalo metro. Grand Island, North Tonawanda, parts of Kenmore-Tonawanda and Starpoint(just outside of Lockport) are some other suburban school districts that could work. Williamsville is viewed as being the best district in the area. North of Buffalo gets less snow within the metro too. Seneca Niagara is the casino in Niagara Falls.

Here is some info, with other casinos mentioned as well: Seneca Casinos |

Turning Stone Resort Casino

Akwesasne Mohawk Casino - Upstate New York - New York's North Country - Montreal - Ottawa - Mohawk Casino - www.mohawkcasino.com

There are plans for non Native casinos in the state as well. There is a nanotech facility planned for the Utica area that has been holding interviews. The facility would be in Marcy at the SUNY IT campus. Marcy Nanocenter at SUNYIT

One last thing, a Rochester suburb may put you within an hour or so of Turning Stone and Seneca Niagara. Victor is one that I had in mind and is an area that is growing, has a great shopping mall and very good schools along with close access to the NYS Thruway.
