Which lake, Old Hickory-Hendersonville, TN or Lake Norman-Moorseville, NC. We are a family from NJ, looking for a change. Our price range is $400's. We want an area that would give us the outdoor life style almost year round (boating, fishing, hiking).
Lake Norman area is growing extremely fast--IMO the infrastructure cannot quite handle this amount of growth. It will be a few years before they get around to some basic things like sidewalks, and right now the traffic and constant construction make like tense. On the plus side, you will find just about any store you desire, especially in Cornelius. IMO, the nicest town in the area is Davidson--but that's just my taste.
Be sure to go and take a look for yourself. It is very difficult to describe Lake Norman over the internet.
I don't know a whole lot about Hendersonville...is it close to Nashville? If not, I would go with Lake Norman so you could have Charlotte nearby and also be in a few hours drive to the ocean. Jetton park, on Lake norman is really nice and the nearby areas are cute too. I live off of Lake Wylie and there are some great neighborhoods here but not yet as built up as Lake Norman.
here is a link to my neighborhood on lake wylie if you're interested. They have a list of homes for sale on there...it's a gated community though which I know isn't for everyone. good luck to ya! http://www.riverhillsplantation.com/
Hendersonville is a northeast suburb of Nashville in Sumner County. The commute into Nashville from I-65 can be a bit of a challenge but $400k should buy you quite a nice home there.
The suburbs of Charlotte and Nashville are probably fairly similar. I'd suggest visiting both places you're interested in a getting a feel for which environment would work best for your family and way of life.

just looked at the link it looks pretty. I may have go for a little road trip up there. Also it seems like it's about the same distance to the city as lake norman so...do you want to be closer to charlotte and somewhat close to the ocean or nashville and really close to the mountains?? Or look at what homes in your price range are like and just go with the house you fall in love with if it's just a lake house you want, ya know?
Lake Hickory - One hour from Asheville and Charlotte.
Our search took us to our utopia on Lake Hickory, North Carolina. We are about an hour northwest of Charlotte. The town has everything we need. Year round constant lake level, sandy bottom, no traffic, great schools, lots of golf, and all of the stores, malls, restaurants are less than 15 minutes away. And about half the price of Lake Lure, Lake James, or Lake Norman. We found www.nclakefront.com website to be very help in looking at Anchors Landing and Plantation Pointe on Lake Hickory. Good Luck in your search!
