I am not "throwing out" anyone's suggestions, just trying to let people know what I am looking for personally. Traverse City is a little small, but it is still a cool place! Definitely a cool place.
No, I meant that I was "throwing out" Asheville and Portland, as my original suggestions to you based on what you wrote in your original post, which did not include anything about them being lesser known cities. I hope that clarifies things.
And don't get too caught up with raw city population numbers. TC anchors a metro area of 150k and definitely feels larger than 14,000.
I'd definitely add Traverse City to that list. Technically it only has 14k people in it. But that has more to do with Michigan's impossible annexation laws. It has an urban area that exceeds 60k people, a metro area like mentioned 150k, and amenities of a city six times its size or more.

Glens Falls, NY is like this too. It even has suburbs surrounding the city of about 14,000.
Kalamazoo, next closest city is Grand Rapids 45 mins away. It seems to do pretty well, but it's a college town does that disqualify it?
I love Kalamazoo! I went to college there, great town.
Marquette is another Michigan college town between 20k and 90k worth discussing here.
