So Ruth Chris, Morton's, Cheesecake Factory, TGIFridays, Applebee's, and Chili's are garbage? I do see the just of your point though.
I mean, yes, right? The only time I will ever eat in a chain restaurant or fast food is if I'm at the airport or if I'm back in Iowa and my grandma wants to go to Red Lobster or something.
There are a few decent places out there, mostly the Mortons and high end places, but your typical chain like TGI Friday's and Applebee's are the bottom rung of food. It's mostly just garbage.
Hipsterism aside, most people eat at fast food restaurants. A lot of people just lie about it because this country's culture believes in shaming people into desired behavior.
Nonetheless, in the South, you have more it seems. Zaxby's, Chick Fil-A, Raising Cane's, Hardee's, Fatz, Dairy Queen, Firehouse Subs
In the North you have Tim Horton's and Boston Market.
In the west, you have In and Out Burger, Tastee Freez, Whattaburger.
I'm not saying that you can't have a few of each in other areas, just where the concentration lies.
I'm in the North. We don't have Tim Horton's (I know there are a few along a couple of borders but it's not common and there's none where I live.) We do have Chick Fil-A, Hardee's and Dairy Queen.
We also have Burger King, McD's, Wendy's, Popeye's, Subway, KFC, and more (just thinking of fast food).

It's hipsterish to prefer to support a local business?
I used to be a busboy at Morton's Steakhouse in White Plains, NY and still receive $1.93 via check every 6 Months or something from a class action law-suit....so there's that lol.
But there's no reason to ever go to a chain when there are so many local places-at least in Philly.

North also has Chipotle which is considered casual rather than fast.

Weird. May I ask where that geographical oddity is?

It's hipsterish to hate on fast food.
Sometimes it's the cheaper option for low-income families and franchises are often-times owned by local businessmen. Not to mention, employs local folks.

Is it concentrated in the North? I always thought they were spread out.

Same here exactly. Never been to a Tim Horton's. It says there aren't any within the biggest zone you can search on the site. You in Ohio? I'm a good ways away in Wisconsin, and it's identical as your list. I don't know anyone who's been to a Boston Market in a decade, but there are locations here and there.
I'll take Culver's over every single fast food burger joint in the south. Again, we're talking garbage food here, so it doesn't really matter, but it's weird how people classify these things regionally.
Almost no one in this thread has said anything negative about fast food. Most of the restaurants that are being derided are anything but fast, and there are local fast food options in lots of places. Eat where you want. I'd just rather give my dollars to my neighbor than funnel a big chunk of them out of my town, especially if I'm getting better food along the way.
the only "chain" food place I actually love to death is.......
wait for it.....
Drum roll, please...........
