I've lived in three states -- New York, South Carolina, and Maryland. SC and MD both have good looking popular flags. You see them displayed in various forms all over the place (in my experience, a little more in Md). But then there is New York-- it has a bland flag. And you never ever see it except in front of government buildings and you don't get the feeling of a lot of state-level pride like in md and sc.

So what do you think? Does a good looking state flag makes it easier for people to identify with their state?

Nah. Most people probably don't even know what's on the flag.

I know there's a bear on the CA flag, but even if it had a rat on it, it wouldn't have anything to do with how I felt about my state. Flags were designed by some small group of people a very long time ago. Doesn't reflect anything about the general population's opinion of the state then or today.

I can bet the way their state flag looks has nothing to do with the pride people have in their home states.

Louisiana doesnt use the State flag as much as regional ones. The Acadian flaf for example is everywhere.

interesting, I love that Acadian culture. One of my favorite tunes got me interested in that Acadian/french louisiana culture , by a canadian band with a southern american singer.

The Band Acadian driftwood

Colorado's flag is relatively popular, and has a good design. You see it all over, from the state highway signs, to being woven into company logos.

New Mexico has my favorite state flag by far. Why do you hate it?

It looks like a splotch of ketchup on a yellow table cloth. Or maybe two red spiders drowning in a puddle of mustard. Either way, it reminds me of condiments and death. God, it makes me hate myself so much.

WARNING! Terrible state flag below:

On the other hand, the OPs least favorite flag has a bunch of things I consider awesome: women, mountains, and eagles

I repeat, women... mountains... eagles. Freaking awesome flag. And it is all emblazoned on a field of my favorite color, dark blue.

Some other cool stuff I just noticed about the New York state flag: Little sun face, woman on right is wearing a blindfold like she just doesn't even care (badass), woman on left is stepping on crown (take that monarchist scum!) and she has a tiny sorting hat from Harry Potter on the end of her staff. Also, ships from the 'Age of Sail'. That conjures up images of swashbucklers and adventure on the high seas. That is cool.

Oh, and it says "EXCELSIOR" which is what I like to yell into the night when I am standing up through the sunroof of a limousine while plastered on champagne.

So sure, the New Mexico flag is kind of pretty. The Zia sun-symbol is respectable. But New York's flag tells a story. A totally freaking wicked story.
