Thanks for your replies. Most of you get it, so let me add...

North Birmingham- Older homes ripe for gentrification an urban pioneers here lately but mostly known for crime, blight and some abandoned properties. It is constantly reported on in the news for possible development to revitalize the area. A 100+ years ago it was a separate city that was annexed by Birmingham.

No one really says South Birmingham at all, just Southside- Very nice part of town. Lots of medical professionals, hipsters, professors, etc. Restored homes. Some very expensive. Nice parks. Lots of foot traffic, dogwalkers, bicyclers, etc. Certain streets have some of the most exclusive and expensive homes in the city that aren't in nearby Mountain Brook or the Hollywood section of Homewood.

Instead of West Birmingham, most people say West End or Ensley although they are distinct areas. Sometimes Southwest Birmingham, but that's typically what the news will say when reporting a crime. Typically the roughest part of town.

Not as many people say East Birmingham (also a separate city more than a century ago), but it is an area receiving more attention of late for urban pioneers, hipsters moving into neighborhoods like Avondale, Crestwood, East Lake and Roebuck.
